In Christ, identity is received before it is performed. We are loved by God, forgiven through Christ, and welcomed into his household. Our choices still matter, of course, and there is much growing left to do. But change now begins from a secure place. God does not say, “Become perfect, and perhaps I will love you.” He meets us in mercy and forms us by grace. That security lets us confess sin without pretending to be flawless.
