Modern Day Heresy

We always need to be aware of false teachings that are happening in our midst. We do this by being students of God's Word (the Bible), and then use it as our measure.

Like all generations we are susceptible to following teachings that tickle our ears.

"For the time will come when people will not tolerate sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, will multiply teachers for themselves because they have an itch to hear what they want to hear. 4 They will turn away from hearing the truth and will turn aside to myths."
2 Timothy 4:3

A modern day heresy is the "New Apostolic Reformation" movement that is starting to sweep the church. This is a worldwide movement and you will find leanings of it in our own area of the North Country. We need to be aware of it so that we don't fall into the trappings that it lays out for us. The NAR tends to elevate the church to the position of little "g" gods, claiming that we need to have dominion over the 7 mountains of culture. One pastor recently said that "we need to help Jesus come back" and they believe we do this by gaining more and more power in our world. Using world power is the foundation of this movement. We all crave power and control, but Jesus showed us another way.

"It is a terrible thing when such a one gets the idea he is a prophet or a messenger of God or a man with a mission to reform the world...He is capable of destroying religion and making the name of God odious to men." Thomas Merton

Here are some resources to help you understand this heresy more clearly.

Counterfeit Kingdom

"In Counterfeit Kingdom, apologists and NAR experts Holly Pivec and Douglas Geivett show how the NAR’s key tenets distort the gospel, twist the Scriptures, are influenced by New Age practices, and lead faithful Christians to shipwreck their faith. They also offer practical suggestions for readers who are already influenced by the NAR, curious about it, or concerned about loved ones who have been swept up in the movement.

What used to be on the fringes of the church is now mainstream, and many are being influenced by it unaware. This book is a wake-up call." Purchase it here.

"The New Apostolic Reformation, or NAR, is an unbiblical religious movement that emphasizes experience over Scripture, mysticism over doctrine, and modern-day 'apostles' over the plain text of the Bible."
